European Union Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says
The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the decision.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.
