Over two dozen Olympic medallists, mentors and other global sports figures have put their names to a statement calling for a halt to the death penalty of a boxing titleholder and trainer, who is on death row in Iran.

Growing Global Anger

Amid increasing global condemnation over Iran’s expanding employment of capital punishment as a tool of oppression, the forcefully phrased letter censures the Iranian regime's decision to confirm the execution order of Mohammad Javad Vafaei Sani.

The athlete, thirty, from the city in the northeastern region, was taken into custody for taking part in nationwide protests in the year 2019 and charged of supporting an resistance movement. He has spent 60 months in incarceration, where he has been abused and held in solitary confinement.

“Athletics is intended to encourage optimism, unity, and fortitude,” the endorsers wrote. “The death penalty of a winner for his beliefs is a direct assault on these ideals and a caution to all sportspeople who attempts to voice opinions.

Record of Killing Competitors

The statement noted that the boxer's case was not unique and underscored the country's past of executing sports champions for their convictions, including a football captain, captain of the soccer squad, and a women's sports leader, leader of the women's volleyball squad. In the year 2020, a wrestling champion, a 27-year Iranian competitor, was put to death.

Other endorsers to the appeal include a sailing champion, who skippered the first female-only team in a global yacht race and was the first woman to receive a renowned sailing award; the ex- leader of the soccer side a sports advocate; and a sports figure, who was in the country's selection for the global tournament.

Arrest and Unfair Trial

The athlete was arrested in early 2020. The charges against him comprised “spreading corruption on Earth through incendiarism and damage of public property”. His verdict has been overturned multiple times but on 4 October it was confirmed on the latest review. His trial was criticized as “highly unjust” by human rights activists and groups.

Appeal to United Nations

The urging to halt the boxer's execution comes after a earlier appeal to the global human rights chief for human rights, signed by more than one hundred advocates and groups, urging action to prevent the competitor's death.

Execution Crisis

Based on findings, there is an “capital punishment escalation in the country, which has attained alarming proportions”.
