Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for an extended period when numerous of them entered the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights affecting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminals use a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that such operations become not financially viable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
